‘I never took sides with Natasha’, Ahmed Lawan clarifies

The lawmaker representing Yobe North Senatorial District, Ahmed Lawan has denied ever taking sides with Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Senate President in the event that led to the former’s suspension.

Lawan in a statement issued by his media aide, Ezrel Tabiowo, said he only made comments in line with procedures and the need to uphold the integrity of the Nigerian Senate.

Recall that during the plenary on March 6, the Senate members had voted for the suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan.

During the process, Lawan had pleaded with the Senate leadership to refrain from withdrawing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s security details.

In his defence, Lawan said the Senate lacked the authority to do so as the Kogi lawmaker, despite her suspension, is still a member of the Senate.

While many Nigeria understood that as Lawan standing with the female lawmaker in her travail, the former Senate President has said that he never supported Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Tabiowo said, “At no point did Senator Lawan defend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan or take sides in the allegations against the Senate President.

“His intervention was purely a matter of principle, reflecting his commitment to due process and the rule of law.

“Senator Ahmad Lawan remains a statesman who prioritizes the stability and dignity of the National Assembly,“ the statement stated.
