A Nigerian Army officer, Abdulkadir Musa, accused of leading soldiers to assault residents of Evuti community in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, has denied the allegations, saying he was first assaulted and followed due process in responding to the incident.
Speaking to SaharaReporters, Abdulkadir narrated his side of the story that took place on the night of Sunday, June 8, 2025, which had sparked outrage in the Evuti community over what some described as military brutality.
According to the officer, the altercation was triggered by an attack on him and his fiancée by two local youths.
Abdulkadir explained that he was walking with his fiancée, identified simply as Fati, around 10:00 p.m. after retrieving their phones from a charging point when they encountered twin brothers, Hassan and Hussaini, on a narrow path.
He said, “On their way back, two boys, named Hassan and Hussaini, pushed Fati, accusing her of obstructing their path.
“In the course of the confrontation, they slapped me ad Fati which further intensified the dispute.
“This led to a physical altercation between the twins and me during which they turned my clothes.”
Some residents further told SaharaReporters that Abdulkadir involved the Evuti Police Division, which attempted without success to summon the twins for statements.
Abdulkadir told SaharaReporters that the matter escalated the following day, Monday, when the brothers confronted him again and issued a direct warning.
“The following day, Monday, tensions flared again when the twins confronted me, warning me to be cautious and emphatically said I could not challenge them,” he said.
“This provocation prompted me to involve my military colleagues.”
Abdulkadir denied reports of indiscriminate assault, claiming the soldiers did not beat anyone, but were simply searching for the twins, who had gone into hiding.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters reported earlier on Tuesday that residents of Evuti accused Abdulkadir of mobilising soldiers from the Duma military base to attack civilians over a dispute involving his fiancée.
It was learnt that homes were ransacked, several people were beaten, and even the mother of a police inspector was taken to the hospital after the encounter.
