‘It’s a Matter of Time’ – El-Rufai Fears Imminent Arrest After Associates’ Detention

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has alleged that the APC-led federal government may arrest him, claiming political pressure is forcing politicians to defect or remain within the ruling party. In a BBC Hausa interview on Wednesday, the ADC chieftain stated that four of his former associates in Kaduna have been detained, adding: “It’s only a matter of time before they come for me too.”

His comments follow the arrest and ongoing trial of former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, who remains in EFCC custody over allegations of abuse of office, money laundering, and terrorism financing—charges Malami has dismissed as a political witch-hunt following his defection from APC to ADC.

The allegations heighten political tensions and deepen public perception of the selective prosecution of opposition figures.
It raises concerns about the independence of anti-corruption agencies and their role in pre-election political manoeuvring.
El-Rufai positions himself as a target, while the government faces scrutiny over the timing of high-profile arrests.
The claims reinforce narratives of a shrinking democratic space ahead of the next election cycle.
The timing, following Malami’s detention and El-Rufai’s escalating criticism, suggests coordinated political pressure.

The coming weeks will test the government’s commitment to due process and whether El-Rufai indeed faces arrest or if this remains a political warning.
