Olumuwiya Adejobi said the actions of the thugs were not proper and could not be dignified. Adejobi said Nigerians have the right to peaceful protest.
Speaking on News Central programme on Wednesday, the Police Force Public Relations Officer said the video sent to him by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, on WhatsApp; has been forwarded to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade.
He charged the market leaders to make a formal complaint to the Lagos Commissioner of Police for further action. He added that police may not be able to take action unless the market leaders help to identify the thugs.
“This particular video, I have seen it and even Mr. Femi Falana sent it to me on WhatsApp. I believe every market in Lagos is organized. The leaders of this market should have contacted to Commissioner of Police. If they have not done so, they should please so that the CP can see if they will be able to do one or two things.
“I doubt they know some of these people because this place is too crowdy. They can help the police identify some of them. It is not proper, We cannot dignify what they have done. It is easier for the market leaders and shop owners to identify the people than the police,” he said.
Giving an update on Wednesday, on the thugs, on AIT State of the Nation, monitored by our correspondent; Adejobi said he could not confirm if any of the thugs have been arrested.
He re-emphasized that market leaders must collaborate with the police to identify the thugs. He also advised protest organizers to meet with the Lagos Island market leaders to be able to identify the thugs.
“I cannot confirm if anybody has been arrested. I have directed that they (protest organizers) meet with the leadership of the market. The leadership of the market should be able to know some of these people,” he added.
