JUST IN: Nigeria’s daily fuel importation drops by 30 million litres

The Nigerian government on Tuesday, April 15, said that the nation has witnessed a significant drop in the importation of fuel also known as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

This was disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed.

Ahmed while speaking at the “Meet-the-Press” briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the State House in Abuja said the daily import of PMS in Nigeria dropped by 30 million litres between August 2024 and April 2025.

According to the NMDPRA boss, PMS importation dropped from 44.6 million litres per day in August 2024 to 14.7 million litres per day by mid-April 2025.

A 67 per cent reduction in the daily importation of fuel, Ahmed said this is due to the increased local production of PMS.

“After contributing virtually nothing in August, local plants delivered 26.2 million litres per day in early April, a jump from the 3.4 million litres recorded in September, the first month with measurable output,” Ahmed noted.

He also stated that the local production of fuel in the country has increased by 670 per cent within the past eight months, thus the sharp decline in PMS importation.

The NMDPRA boss further promised that his administration will ensure that more import licences are granted to strictly close the supply gaps in the commodity.

He assured that NMDPRA is committed to boosting Nigeria’s refining capacity for energy security.
