Speaking on Monday during a meeting on Victoria Island with participants from the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Lagos State Government, Hamzat criticized the billing practices of the electricity provider, Eko DisCo.
He shared his personal experience, highlighting the challenges that ordinary Lagosians face with power supply.
“Last month, in my house, or the state house that I live in, the bill was N2.7m. This month, Eko DisCo sent us a bill of N29m. It’s crazy,” Hamzat said, revealing that he had already purchased a meter to avoid estimated billing.
However, he lamented that converting to a proper metering system has been a difficult process.
He also pointed out a distressing case in Surulere, where a man was issued an electricity bill of N2.8 million, which was higher than his annual rent of N2 million.
“How can the bill be more than the man’s rent for a year? Our people are suffering because of estimated billing,” Hamzat said.
