‘My husband stole money from my account, insisted I change my name on my property to his’

A woman, Adebisi, has dragged her husband, Muyideen, before Grade A Customary Court, sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, alleging that he was a thief and in the habit of withdrawing money from her account without her knowledge.

She added that he was a gold digger and that he fought her over her property, which she acquired before she got married to him.

According to Adebisi, her husband insisted that she change the name on her property to his name, which she disagrees with.

The plaintiff thus prayed the court to end their relationship and grant her custody of their only child, but make him responsible for his upkeep.

Muyideen denied all the allegations brought against him.

He also refused their union, be dissolved.

Adebisi, in her testimony, said, “I got married to my husband last year.

“I was already pregnant with his child by the time we got married.

“ I gave in to my husband’s love advances because I believed he loved me, but he was deceiving the whole while.

“The reality dawned on me a few weeks after we got married that my husband was nothing but a gold digger.

“He offered my parents my bride price, but this was returned to him as the tradition is in my family, and I moved in with him as his third wife.

“He started complaining that I was too close to my father and that I always divulge all that was happening in our relationship to him.

“I tried to convince him that I was only seeking counsels from my father on issues I found intricate to handle, but he would not have any of it.

“My husband went further to put pressure on me.

“He started demanding that I change the name on my property to his.

“I felt uncomfortable doing this because I acquired most of these properties before getting married to him.

“I also felt it was not wise and safe doing this because our marriage is polygamous.

“This became a big issue between us.

“We fought over it and were separated for some months.

“Our family members mediated in our differences, and apportioned him blame after listening to both of us.

“We were reconciled, and I moved back home.

“Almost two months after this, I was woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of a notification on my phone.

“I picked up my phone and saw an alert indicating a transfer from my account to that of my husband.

“I sought an explanation from him on this, and he said he borrowed the sum from me.

“I became worried and inquisitive, and thus decided to go to the bank and request the printout of my account statement.

“To my chagrin, my husband had been transferring money from my account to his for quite some time.

“He would wait till the middle of the night when I was deep asleep and pick up my phone and do the transaction.

“He would then delete the notification of the transaction from my phone and return my phone before I woke up.

“I fought him over this because part of the money in my account belonged to someone else.

“He took to threatening me after this, and I reported him at the police station.

“I moved out of his house after this.

“He has not relented in threatening and fighting me over my property.

“I request an order restraining him from threatening and interfering with my private life.

“I also plead for the custody of our only child, but pray that the court mandate him to be responsible for his upkeep.”

The court president, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case until December 22.
