A woman, Aminat, has dragged her husband, Abas before Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking that their wedlock be dissolved on the accounts of irresponsibility, battery, violence and abandonment.... CLICK TO READ THE FULL NEWS HERE▶▶
Aminat stated that Abass contributed nothing to enhance her life and that of their children.
The plaintiff also said that the defendant was hardly at home and that the few times he was around, their children always kept their distance because he was always harsh and unfriendly towards them.
She mentioned if an instance when he sent their first child who was four years old out of the house for a mild offence.
Aminat also said that she was most of the time responsible for their children’s welfare and especially their education.
She further said that he refused to sponsor their first further education after she graduated from the secondary school.
According to her, she later got impregnated.
She said the plaintiff she worked round the clock to ensure that her home experienced no lack, but that all her husband knew to do was to beat her.
According to Aminat, Abass once abandoned her and their first child, which made her move back to her parents’ house for five years.
She added that he once accused her of immorality and descended on her with punches despite being pregnant, which led to her fainting.
The plaintiff further said that the defendant chased her out of his house with a cutlass after they fought and that she never returned there.
She thus prayed the court for the dissolution of their union while she also pleaded for custody of their children and her husband being made responsible for their upkeep.
Abass denied all the allegations brought against him but acceded to divorce.
The defendant refused that the plaintiff had custody of their children.
He stated that he and his wife jointly paid their children school fees and that he attended to their other needs.
Abass explained that he never enjoyed his marriage to his wife because his father-in-law was always indulging his wife and interfering in their affairs.
According to the defendant, the plaintiff and his father encouraged their male child to engage in Yahoo Yahoo and further went to make ritual for him.
He added that his wife joined a ladies’ club known for engaging in immorality and that she became defiant and rebellious in the home.
Aminat testifies, “My husband is selfish and inhumane.
“He showed no interest in my welfare and of our children and consistently starved us.
“My husband was hardly ever at home, and any time he was home, our children go into hiding because of his harsh and hostile nature
“He once beat our first child, who was then four years old to a pulp for failing to attend Arabic lesson and sent her out of the house.
“I am the one paying our children’s school fees and meeting their other needs.
“He refused to make funds available for our first child to further her education after graduating from the secondary school, and she ended up being impregnated.
“My husband once abandoned me and our children, and I had no other choice than to move back to my parents’ house.
“I and our children were there for five years before we were reconciled again.
“I joined a ladies club for the purpose of getting a loan.
“He supported me and even bought me their T. Shirt, but he later turned against me.
“He started accusing me of dating other men and beat me till I fainted despite being pregnant.
“I ran out of his house and never returned after he chased me with a machete during fight.
“My lord, all I pray for is the dissolution of our marriage and custody of our children.
“I plead that the court compel him to be responsible for our children’s upkeep, giving feeding, education and health care, priority.”
Abass responding said, “All that my wife said are lies. I am also fed up with our relationship. I, therefore, support its dissolution.
“I am responsible for our children’s education and did pay for their West African Examination Council Examination (WAEC).
“My lord, my father-in-law refused that our marriage worked.
“He was always indulging my wife, giving orders and dictating the tune.
“My wife always sent our children to her father any time I disciplined them.
“I was involved in a ghastly motor accident and was hospitalised for months.
“My wife and her father had turned our children’s lives upside down by the time I was discharged.
“Our first child who was living with my father-in-law without my consent was impregnated under his nose.
“He and my wife supported our second child, who is 18 years old and engages in Yahoo Yahoo.
“My wife did ritual for him, while my father-in-law rented for him an apartment, all because of what they gain from his indecent lifestyle.
“My wife left my house after we fought for being defiant and unruly after interacting with ladies who were morally decadent.
“She left with my property, documents of my landed property and pictures.
“I pray the court to help retrieve all from her.”
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case after she had heard both parties.
