Nationwide protest: These atrocities are unacceptable

International human rights organisation, Amnesty International (AI) has condemned the attack and firing of teargas at Nigerians protesting under the platform of the Take-It-Back Movement.

The organisation said that the attacks on the protesters by the security operatives during protests in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Abuja and other cities are disheartening.

In a statement posted on its X account on Monday, April 7, AI said it is deeply concerned by the action of the police during the protests against the Cybercrime Act and economic hardship in the country.

Recall that some protesters were attacked by police officers during the nationwide protest organised by TIB and some other civil society organisations.

The protesters, especially those in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, led by former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore had teargas fired at them during their march.

Some other protesters were said to have been reportedly arrested by the police.

In reaction to these attacks, AI said, “Amnesty International is deeply concerned by security forces’ attacks on protesters in Abuja and Port Harcourt,” the statement read.

“Amnesty International is deeply concerned by security forces’ attacks on protesters in Abuja and Port Harcourt. Protesters and journalists were beaten in Port Harcourt.

“In Damaturu Yobe state 4 activists have been unlawfully arrested. These atrocities are unacceptable & must be investigated,” Amnesty International wrote on X.
