She had posted, “This Lagos is a smelly city. People smell, the streets smell, the gutters smell, the water smells, everything is smelly. I’m tired.”
The post placed her job in jeopardy as a nurse in General Hospital, Gbagada, because the hospital is run by the Lagos State Government.
According to her critics, the post is disrespectful to the government that gave her employment as an outsider over the indigenous people.
An X user, Bayo, strongly condemned her tweet, describing it as “public ridicule.” He tagged Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and then-Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, urging them to take action.
“Dear Lagos government, you’re leaving the lives and economy of Lagos in the hands of people that hate their employers,” the user wrote.
“If #jidesanwoolu and #mudashiru_obasa will not start demanding respect from people that are taking jobs away from aboriginals, we will also not stop adding external LEGAL pressure until we get the desired respect.”
Shortly after her post went viral, Ugbede took to social media with claims of facing attacks.
Coming to her aide, an X user, Cross’s, offered her a job abroad in case she gets sacked as a nurse at her then hospital.
“Hi #nurse_ugbede, trust you are having a beautiful morning. So one of my Ogas asked me to reach out to you. Just in case anything happens to your job, and you are willing to work in another country, kindly notify me. Will share an email address you can forward your CV to too,” Cross wrote.
On Tuesday, Ugbede announced her new job on X, writing, “I got the job, guys.”
Reflecting on her journey, she added: “Just remember that by this time last year, I was homeless in Lagos! Squatting with a friend and borrowing money to pay rent.
“One year later, I got my big girl job and big girl pay. I wondered when it would happen, but when it’s your turn, God will part the ocean!”
The same Bayo who reported her to the Lagos State Government has now reacted to the new development.
He shared, “Dear @nurse_ugbede, Congratulations on your new job offer and we appreciate you for decongesting Lagos from smelling.
“Best of luck on your new endeavors. I sincerely hope that those who believe the Yorùbá land is not favourable or conducive enough for them like Nurse Ugbede can also jump on the next Ugandan Airline flight.
“@followlasg let’s replace her with someone that will do their job without grumbling and will also respect the Yorùbá people.”
