President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and admirers of the late legendary singer, songwriter, actor, and politician Onyeka Onwenu. In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, and titled ‘President Tinubu Mourns Iconic Artiste, Onyeka Onwenu’, the president expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of the “Queen of Songs.”

President Tinubu praised Onwenu’s artistic contributions, highlighting her timeless rendition of ‘One Love’ in the 1990s, which evoked a strong sense of fellowship and harmony. He also reminisced about her classic collaboration with King Sunny Ade on ‘Wait for Me,’ a melodic campaign promoting family planning in the 1980s. “Ms Onwenu lives on in her immortal masterpieces,” the President stated, celebrating her as a versatile and immensely talented artist who brought joy to many through her diverse artistic expressions.

In his tribute, Tinubu extended his condolences to the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and Onwenu’s numerous fans, acknowledging the immeasurable loss of such a cherished figure. He prayed for the repose of her soul, expressing hope that she finds eternal peace in a place “where the music never fades, and where there is ‘Dancing in the Sun.’”

Onwenu, aged 72, passed away on Tuesday night at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday party of the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Stella Okoli, where she had performed. Her death marks the end of an era for a beloved artist whose work transcended generations and borders, leaving an indelible mark on Nigerian culture and music.
