PDP NWC holds emergency meeting as defections rock party

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced an emergency meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The closed-door session, which began on Tuesday, is taking place amid a wave of defections and mounting internal crises within the opposition party.

The meeting follows the collapse of the Delta PDP structure into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move led by Sheriff Oborevwori, governor of the state.

Oborevwori was joined by former vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa, along with members of the National and State Assemblies, commissioners, and local government chairmen.

The defection, which took place after a strategic meeting in Asaba, saw the entire PDP political machinery in Delta move en bloc to the APC.

Deputy governor Monday Onyeme, members of the state cabinet, local government executives, and key grassroots operatives were all part of the mass exodus.

The PDP NWC is expected to set up a caretaker committee to handle the affairs of the party in the state for the time being.
