In a statement on Friday, Obi described Okupe’s death as a great loss to the nation.

“With great sadness this morning, I received the shocking news of the death of my dear elder brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe. On behalf of the family and the Obidient family, I sincerely mourn his passing,” he said.

Obi praised Okupe’s contributions to the nation’s politics, saying he was a man who worked for a better country. He urged supporters to pray for the late politician’s family during this difficult time.

Okupe, a former presidential aide and Director-General of Obi’s 2023 campaign resigned from the role after a court convicted him of money laundering. Following the election, he left the Labour Party and later became a supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He previously served as a senior adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
