The Premier League title race tightened on Wednesday night after Manchester City and Manchester United both dropped points, while Arsenal and Chelsea recorded important wins.
At the Etihad Stadium, Nottingham Forest fought back to hold City to a dramatic 2-2 draw.
City took the lead in the 31st minute through Antoine Semenyo, who finished neatly to put the champions ahead. The hosts looked comfortable after the break when Rodri doubled the advantage early in the second half.
Forest, battling to stay clear of relegation trouble, refused to fold. Morgan Gibbs-White reduced the deficit midway through the half before Elliot Anderson struck late to snatch a point for the visitors.
The result dented City’s chase of league leaders Arsenal, who had already secured a narrow win away at Brighton & Hove Albion.
At the Amex Stadium, Bukayo Saka scored the only goal as Arsenal claimed a 1-0 victory to strengthen their grip at the top of the table.
The winger struck in the ninth minute, squeezing a shot from the edge of the box through the goalkeeper’s legs after a deflection. It proved enough as Mikel Arteta’s side defended resolutely to protect their lead.
The England international marked his 300th first-team appearance with the decisive moment and now has 148 goal involvements for the club.
The narrow win has increased the gap between first-placed Arsenal and second-placed Manchester City who have a game in hand, to seven points.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United dealt a blow to Manchester United with a 2-1 win at St James’ Park.
The hosts opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time when Anthony Gordon converted from the penalty spot. United hit back moments later as Casemiro powered in a header from a set-piece to level the match.
Despite being reduced to ten men before the break following a red card for Jacob Ramsey, Newcastle snatched victory late on. William Osula struck in the 90th minute to secure all three points for the Magpies.
The defeat ended interim boss Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start in charge of United.
Meanwhile, Chelsea boosted their push for a top-four finish with an emphatic win over Aston Villa, inspired by a hat-trick from Joao Pedro.
Villa had taken an early lead through Douglas Luiz, but the Brazilian forward turned the match around with a clinical display.
Pedro levelled the scores with a close-range finish before delicately lifting the ball over Emiliano Martinez to give Chelsea the lead before the break. He completed his hat-trick in the second half by tapping in a cross from Alejandro Garnacho after Cole Palmer had added Chelsea’s third.
The result lifted Chelsea into fifth place and narrowed the gap on Villa to three points as the race for Champions League places intensifies.
