The Police Service Commission (PSC) has extended the application deadline for the recruitment of 50,000 police constables by two weeks, following an overwhelming public response.
According to a statement from the commission’s spokesman, Torty Njoku, over 400,000 applications have been received since the portal opened in December 2025. The new closing date is February 8, 2026.
The extension aims to address significant disparities in application numbers across states, with low participation noted in Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Anambra, to ensure more equitable nationwide representation.
Key Points:
The staggering 8:1 applicant-to-vacancy ratio highlights the severe unemployment crisis and the high demand for secure public sector jobs in Nigeria.
The extension is a strategic move to improve geographic balance in recruitment, promoting federal character principles within the police force.
The low application rates in some southern states may reflect regional perceptions of the police institution or alternative economic opportunities.
The process demonstrates a move towards a more digital, centralized, and transparent recruitment system for a critical national institution.
The high volume of applicants will necessitate a rigorous and fair screening process to select qualified candidates from a large pool.
The massive turnout underscores the critical need for job creation while presenting an opportunity to build a more representative and competitively selected police force.
