The relationship between both nations dates back to the early 1970s, with a common denominator being that they are former colonies of the British Empire. Both countries are also members of the Commonwealth of Nations and African Union.
The relationship strengthened in 1994 when Nigeria actively opposed the apartheid regime of South Africa. Despite the mutual respect and relationship shared, both countries have recently faced competition. Cultural differences and diplomatic disputes, including xenophobic riots and violence in South Africa targeting Nigerians, have also arisen.
Many have described the relationship as a “love-hate relationship.”
The recent disqualification of Chidimma Adetshina, who was forced to withdraw from Miss South Africa due to a nationality row, brought the relationship between both countries to light. She has since accepted an invitation to participate in Miss Universe Nigeria.
On social media, banter and trolling continue. The latest trend on X (formerly Twitter) is “Request in Nigeria.” While its origin is unknown, MyNigeria observes that South Africans have updated their location to show they are in Lagos or any Nigerian city to order a Bolt. The primary objective of the trend is to frustrate the efforts of drivers of the ride-hailing app in the country.
