Rivers crisis can consume Nigeria’s democracy – Methodist Bishop warns

A Bishop of Methodist Church Nigeria, Bishop Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha has expressed worry that the current political imbroglio in Rivers State can spread to other States and consume Nigeria’s democracy.

Bishop Onuoha, who was reacting to the outcome of the recent Supreme Court ruling, said it could affect good governance and make the ordinary people suffer.

He warned the political class in Nigeria not to overheat the nation because of their selfish political interests.

In a message he personally signed, Onuoha said: “I will only advise all involved in the Rivers crisis to give peace a chance.

“I have sat down and wondered why this issue has not been resolved through round table discussions. Is it actually a way to make our democracy grow? For me, there is nothing democratic in this. My worry is what happens next.”

He also advised Rivers State people and men of conscience in the country to defend democracy.
