Scores cheat death as 33kVA ignites fire in Ilorin

Occupants of three units of 3-bedroom apartments in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, Thursday, narrowly escaped death as a 33kVA transmission line fell on water tank, igniting fire that engulfed one of the flats. The incident, Blueprint gathered, occurred on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at about 21:12 hours, at Alfa Olorunkemi compound located behind the Kwara State House of Assembly in the Asa-Dam area.

It was gathered that men of the Kwara State Fire Service who responded swiftly to a distress call initially had difficulty in putting off the fire due to continued electricity supply to the lines while the fire was still raging.

The Head of Media and Publicity of the Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, who confirmed the incident in a statement in Ilorin on Friday said he had to personally put a distress call to the control room of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), requesting power shut down from the affected feeder before the fire brigade could extinguish the fire.
