The Supreme Court on Friday, August 23, dismissed the appeal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last governorship election in Imo State, Samuel Anyawu.
Justice Mohammed Baba Idris, in the lead judgment, resolved all the issues raised for determination in the appeal against the appellants.
How Uzodimma became Imo governor
Uzodimma was first elected governor of Imo State after coming in fourth in the governorship poll following the Supreme Court verdict.
He is one of the two governors of the APC in the five states of the southeast. Southeast is ravaged by insecurity, particularly with the activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Recall that Uzodinma lost to Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP in the 2019 election and came a distance fourth but was able to emerge as the governor of the state via a court ruling.
Retired justice criticises Uzodimma’s emergence
Uzodinma’s victory at the court was criticised by Retired Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad of the Supreme Court.
The retired justice said: “A number of respected senior members of the bar, inter alia, citing Ahmed Lawan, the former President of the Senate, and the Imo Governorship appeals, claim that decisions of even the apex court have become unpredictable.”
With the second Supreme Court judgment, Governor Uzodimma will be completing eight years as governor of Imo State.
