Police said the teen fell into the water while water-tubing behind a boat on the Mary River at Owanyilla, near Maryborough, about 10.15am today.

He didn’t resurface, sparking a multi-agency rescue effort.

The Bundaberg-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was called to the search at 10.45am.

“There was no sighting of the teen by the helicopter crew who returned to base around 1.30pm,” RACQ LifeFlight Rescue said.

Police, State Emergency Service volunteers and members of the public searched through the afternoon.

Police divers recovered his body just after 6pm and alerted the public later in the evening.

“Police are currently assisting the boy’s family who have requested privacy during this difficult time,” police said.

Officers were preparing a report for the coroner into the death, which wasn’t considered suspicious.

Over the border in NSW, another multi-agency search was under way at Lennox Head.

A man disappeared in the water at Main Beach this afternoon.
