On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, the IGP suggested that the upcoming protest should be held in specific locations and avoid street rallies.
In response to the proposal, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), one of the protest organisers, rejected the suggestion, stating that street processions would lead to convergence at specific locations.
The police, military, Department of State Services (DSS), and politicians have also warned the youth protesters against Kenya-style protests. However, Nigerian youths have expressed their intention to proceed with the protest.
Prior to the protest, Adegboruwa wrote to the IGP requesting police coverage for protesters, which Egbetokun granted.
Adegboruwa informed the IGP that the organizers cannot provide a specific number of participants, as all Nigerians are invited to join. The senior lawyer further assured the IGP that the organizers were not destructive.
Meanwhile, the IGP announced the arrest of some individuals calling for violence during the protests scheduled to take place from August 1-10 nationwide.
