Tinubu’s Clemency for 70 Drug Lords Unprecedented in History – Dino Melaye

Former lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu over the recent presidential clemency granted to some inmates, alleging that about 70 of those pardoned were convicted for drug-related offences.

In a post on X on Sunday, Melaye described the move as “unprecedented in history,” insisting that no government in the world had ever granted such a large-scale pardon to convicted drug offenders.

“Pardon granted to 70 drug lords by President Tinubu is unprecedented in history. Checks have revealed that it has never happened anywhere in the world.

“My advice to the President is to scrap the NDLEA. His action has rendered the agency’s efforts meaningless since its inception,” Melaye stated.

This newspaper recalls that President Tinubu recently granted presidential clemency to 175 persons, including the late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, nationalist Herbert Macaulay, Major General Mamman Vatsa, and Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death for killing her husband, among others.
