NCC’s director of public affairs, Reuben Muoka, stated that the adjustment was authorised under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, which empowers the commission to regulate and approve tariff rates.

This move has sparked outrage from Nigerians who lament the timing of the increase, especially during a time when citizens are facing hardship amid the poor economic situation of the country.

Activist Adeyanju also voiced his grievances with the new tariff increase, lamenting the government’s efforts to ensure Nigerians suffer.

He wrote on his X page on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, “They just increased tariff for all phone calls in the country. The government has vowed that it must finish off Nigerians with suffering. A government from hell!”
