Although Shonekan tried to make key changes to reposition the country during his stint in power including repealing some draconian decrees of Babangida and planning to conduct a new presidential election, the political crisis triggered by the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election won by MKO Abiola and other issues such as nationwide strike hampered his government’s anticipated success.

Also, Babangida made the interim government weak by placing it under the control of the military leadership which restricted the powers of Shonekan. He was removed from office when General Sani Abacha took over power in November that year through a palace coup. Shonekan died on January 11, 2022 in Lekki, Lagos State at the age of 85.
