In his speech, Azikiwe emphasized the need for economic, social, and political integration among African states. He proposed close cooperation with other independent African nations to achieve unity in foreign policy, better mutual understanding, and highlight Africa’s global importance. He suggested starting with a customs union with Nigeria’s neighbors, promoting free trade, and gradually abolishing borders to foster a sense of togetherness.
Additionally, he advocated for joint efforts in building international road systems to connect African regions and cultural exchanges to enhance goodwill and unity. The Pan-African leader stressed that economic and social integration are prerequisites for political unity, warning against premature political integration that could lead to conflict.
