The statistics show that states with the highest illiteracy rates are predominantly from the North. The list includes Bauchi, Kebbi, Zamfara, Yobe, and Borno, the home state of former President Muhammadu Buhari, among others.

One could attribute the decline in children’s attendance in schools to the security challenges facing the northern part of the country. There have been reports of student abductions by bandits and Boko Haram terrorists.

As a result, many families are migrating to other areas to escape the terror and protect their children. Some families have resorted to sending their children to work on farms or engage in street trading, while others send them to learn specific trades.

However, there are families who value education but are unable to afford the necessary tools for their children to receive a basic education.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over Nigeria having the largest number of out-of-school children globally, with low learning achievement, especially in the North-East and North-West sub-regions.

Dr. Tushar Rane, Chief of the Bauchi UNICEF Field Office, noted an increase in dropout rates across all genders, particularly in the northern part of the country, from 2011 to 2021.

The education system in Nigeria faces challenges in retaining students and ensuring continued education across all regions, with persistent issues in the North-East and North-West.

Various obstacles hinder consistent school attendance, timely enrollment, and completion of education for Nigerian children, including inadequate policy planning, budget allocation, teacher shortages, poor infrastructure, cultural norms, health concerns, and economic dependence on children.
