Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the policy reflects China’s intent to deepen engagement with other countries and promote cultural and economic exchange.
The visa-free entry policy will ease entry into China for nationals of the following South American countries: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay.
Beginning from the said date, they would be permitted to stay in China for up to 30 days without a visa under a one-year trial programme, according to an announcement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
An AFP report mentioned Lin Jian as saying that the policy reflects China’s intent to deepen engagement with Latin America and promote cultural and economic exchange.
“We welcome more foreign friends to visit China, to experience the colourful and vibrant China,” Lin said during a press briefing.
The announcement follows the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States Forum ministerial meeting held in Beijing earlier this week, part of a broader effort by China to enhance its global partnerships and reduce reliance on traditional Western alliances.
In addition to Latin American countries, China has recently expanded visa-free entry policy to several nations including many in Europe, as well as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia.
A similar mutual visa exemption agreement with Uzbekistan will also come into effect on June 1.
