A devastating tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Niger State has claimed the lives of 86 individuals, with 55 others suffering injuries. The explosion occurred in the Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, sending shockwaves through the community. In response, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and local authorities worked together to recover the victims, with 80 of them buried in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Healthcare premises. The remaining five victims were returned to their families for burial. The explosion has sparked an outcry over the safety of transport routes, especially as the death toll continues to rise.
As the region grapples with the aftermath, Governor Umaru Bago visited the scene, condemning the reckless driving that contributed to the tragedy. He directed that vehicles from the Maje axis should avoid the Dikko Bridge and instructed the Federal Road Safety Corps to establish a detachment in the area to enforce traffic rules.
The Governor also emphasized the need for the completion of the Minna-Suleja Road, which he believes will help mitigate the risks of such incidents in the future.
