Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for two suspected killers of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, who escaped from police custody.
The police spokesperson in Anambra, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday night, sparking concerns over security lapses in the state.
POLITICS NIGERIA earlier reported that on December 24, 2024, gunmen abducted Justice Azuka, a serving lawmaker in Anambra State. After weeks of intense search, a joint security team discovered his decomposing body on February 6 at the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha.
Following investigations, police arrested nine suspects in connection with the murder. According to Ikenga the escape occurred when police operatives took the two suspects on an operation to apprehend a receiver of stolen vehicles linked to the criminal gang.
“During the operation, the receiver was arrested, and two stolen vehicles were recovered. Unfortunately, the two suspects managed to flee the scene,” he said.
In response, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has launched a manhunt to re-arrest the fleeing suspects.
Additionally, he ordered immediate disciplinary action against any officers found culpable in the incident, assuring the public that stringent measures are in place to ensure justice.
