Videos from several weddings have shown individuals from Kenya, Congo, Zimbabwe, and other African countries dressing in attires from the Yoruba and Igbo tribes.

None of the couples wearing Nigerian traditional outfits at their weddings are said to be Nigerian citizens or have any connections to Nigeria.

Yoruba women are known for their head tie popularly known as “gele” and sophisticated Iro and Buba outfits for their weddings, as well as Asoebi. The men are known for their well assembled agbada outfits, made out of Aso Oke and Adire fabrics.

Igbo men are recognised for their Isiagu, known as Chieftaincy attire, made from fine suede materials and accompanied by a red cap traditionally worn by chiefs but now embraced by all members of the tribe. Coral beads and walking stick are used to complement the attire.

The new trend has left many amased, with many Nigerians praising and expressing excitement over non-Nigerians stylishly embracing traditional Nigerians attires.

However, nationals from other African countries have criticized their people for neglecting their own traditional attires and opting for Nigerian outfits for wedding ceremonies.

As a result, there have been mixed reactions on social media regarding this new trend.

@AderonkeOkeleye: We love it. Let her wear it. We the Yorubas support her 200%. We allow everyone in as much as they do not disrespect us. We are good.

@aall3ee: I think it’s weird because this will be the same people saying Nigerians think they are up there but this is why Nigerians think they are up there, cause you many want to be them , and it’s weird because their own culture is beautiful

@Glow_babyy: And you’ll wear a white gown for your wedding

@macabelee: Anyway thank you for the advocacy, they look so sweet and the attire look so so beautiful on them

The owners of the attire are proud when they’re represented like this anywhere in the world.

@Uchez2: But what is wrong with people deciding to adorn other people’s attire? It is not that deep. They look beautiful, and I love it

@olacuteTunes: Should the whites be mad at us for wearing suits and bridal gowns at our weddings too?

@realemmanueleze: You should be proud when people adopt your way of life.

@ruddy_ralph: Y’all wore suits (not from your culture) for centuries during marriage,no one complained

@PeterPentecost: Clothes are clothes. People have the freedom to wear anything. If they like a Nigerian outfit, let them wear it! How can you be gatekeeping a culture that isn’t even yours?

@josh_amakis: I don’t really think anything is wrong for people from other countries to chose and fell in love to our attire. It shows how rich our culture is and the influence we have globally.

@TheRealHutease: Let them wear it though. It shows how rich Nigerian culture is. Just like the music. An Italian man won’t harass you for putting on Italian suit.
