‘Yeye government; you are testing our patience’ – Nigerians react to new passport fees

The Nigerian Immigration Service revealed that a 32-page passport booklet with a five-year validity, previously priced at N35,000, will now cost N50,000. Similarly, a 64-page passport booklet with a 10-year validity, previously sold at N70,000, will now be N100,000.

The new prices will take effect on September 1, 2024, with the Immigration Service expressing regret for any inconvenience caused to Nigerians.

It was disclosed that the fees for passports in the Diaspora remain unchanged. This recent hike in passport prices has sparked a massive uproar among Nigerians.

Many believe that the 10-day notice demonstrates the government’s lack of empathy for its citizens. Others question the numerous increments from N25,000 to N35,000 and now N50,000, all within a year.

@Enwagboso: The 10-day notice for the passport price increase is an example of the government’s lack of empathy and consideration for its citizens. @officialABAT and @nigimmigration should obviously know this. I recommend reviewing the pricing strategy and considering a reversal or, at the very least, a delayed effective date of January 1, 2025.

@IamEriOluwa: Oh, three gbosa for Nigeria Immigration!!! From 25 to 35 to 50, all within a year. You’ve truly outdone yourselves this time! Let’s all give a round of applause for this stellar move in the middle of an economic crisis. You’re doing so well. I mean, who needs to consider the cost of living or inflation, right? This increase certainly won’t deter anyone from leaving; if anything, it might just speed up the process for those dreaming of greener pastures. This masterstroke will only further cement the notion that the Nigerian government is as sensitive as a rock, completely oblivious to the financial struggles of its citizens. Keep up the great work, truly, it’s the people’s hardship that really brings out the best in government policy.

@bruzieee: Passport that should be free for citizens. What exactly are we benefiting from Nigeria’s purse?
@akunwa_: This is why the 10years-64-pages one is always advisable. I no fit shout

@CultWahalaNaija: Na so so hardship news this tulubu government dey give the poor masses. Very yeye government.

@dammygtnet: Una dun increase money for passport issuance again. You guys are testing our patience!
