Boniface had to be calmed by teammates after he lashed out at Buendia who got in his way during stoppage time in the game that ended 4-1.

Both players came on as substitutes after all the goals had been scored in the game.

“I spoke with Boni,” Alonso said at the post-game press conference.

“I don’t have all the details, but Boni wanted to shoot, it can happen. We don’t want to make something big out of something so small. We’re staying calm. On Monday we’ll keep going again.”

While Buenda joined from Aston Villa in the winter transfer window, Boniface had endured a troubling transfer window which almost saw him move to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Had the deal pulled through, the Nigerian international would have become the richest African footballer.

He currently has 21 goals in 37 Bundesliga games since joining from Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023, He has 10 goals across all competitions this season, despite being hampered by injury.
