BREAKING NEWS: Finally DSS Arrests 26-Year-Old Teacher Over Assassination Attempt on Peter Obi in Benin
The Department of State Services has arrested a 26-year-old teacher in connection with the recent attempted assassination of the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, in Benin, the Edo State capital.
According to a report by TVC News Nigeria, security sources confirmed that the suspect was apprehended following a swift and coordinated covert operation by DSS operatives after armed men opened fire during a political meeting on February 24 in Benin.
Obi, alongside a former governor of Edo State, John Odigie-Oyegun, and several chieftains and members of the African Democratic Congress, narrowly escaped death when gunmen reportedly stormed the venue and fired multiple gunshots, causing panic among attendees.
Shortly after the attack, an individual identified as Udeme Monday Stephen allegedly took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to claim responsibility. In the post, he reportedly boasted that Obi was “lucky” to have survived the Benin incident and issued further threats, suggesting that the former presidential candidate would not be as fortunate next time.
A top security source disclosed that the DSS immediately launched a covert investigation once the online threats surfaced. Using forensic digital analysis and intelligence tracking techniques, operatives were able to trace the origin of the post and identify the suspect.
“The moment the threat was issued, our operatives swung into action. Through forensic and digital intelligence capabilities, the suspect was tracked and arrested,” the source revealed.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect, now in custody, is a 26-year-old teacher.
Investigations are ongoing to find out whether he acted independently or as an agent for a secret mastermind.
However, security agencies have assured the public that all individuals linked to the attack will be identified and brought to justice, reiterating their commitment to safeguarding democratic processes and political participation in Nigeria.
