Former Super Eagles defender Shehu Abdullahi has officially concluded his professional football career to fully focus on his political aspirations, aiming for a position in Nigeria’s House of Representatives in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The 33-year-old, who has had a career that includes both youth and senior international play, is reportedly gearing up to run for the Sokoto North/Sokoto South Federal Constituency under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abdullahi’s foray into public service commenced earnestly when he was appointed as Special Assistant to the Sokoto State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development — a position that seems to have facilitated his deeper engagement in politics.
The confirmation of his retirement and political ambitions was provided by former teammate Ahmed Garba, who disclosed that Abdullahi has completely withdrawn from football.
“Shehu Abdullahi is no longer with Kano Pillars. He has also ceased playing football and has entered politics,” Ahmed Garba informed Completesports.com yesterday.
“He has returned to Sokoto State and is now preparing to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Sokoto North/Sokoto South Federal Constituency.”
Abdullahi’s transition signifies a rising trend of athletes moving into governance, utilizing their public visibility and leadership skills acquired through sports.
If he succeeds in the elections in 2027, Abdullahi would be the first Super Eagles player to transition from the football field to a political office through democratic means.
His candidacy is anticipated to attract considerable attention, especially from young voters and sports fans, as he aims to convert his on-field discipline and teamwork into legislative influence.
