Presidency Breaks Silence Over Alleged Sack of INEC Chairman Yakubu

The Presidency has described as “fake news” speculation on Monday morning regarding the purported removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu.

Earlier reports emanating particularly from social media platforms claimed that Yakubu had been sacked and replaced by Professor Bashiru Olamilekan.

Reacting, O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Digital Media and New Media, took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to address the claims.

“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra wrote.

He added, “Any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or the any other official source.”

Mahmood Yakubu was appointed as INEC Chairman by former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 21, 2015.
