A mob of angry residents in Kogi State on Wednesday mobbed and nearly killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police who identified himself as ASP Samuel.

Samuel was accused of working with Governor Yahaya Bello’s appointee, Friday Makama, to attack and disrupt the campaign rally of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the November governorship election, Alhaji Muritala Ajaka.

In a viral video of the attack seen by SaharaReporters, a man who did not reveal his identity said, “This is the Hillux that Makama used in countering our gubernatorial candidate, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, to Okpachala, some few kilometres away from Idah on our way from the Central during our tour.

“You can see the bullets they shot at the vehicle. Some of our policemen are missing at this moment. We don’t even know where they are now. However, we are waiting for more security. One of them that was apprehended is now helping the Nigerian police at Idah Police Station.”

In another viral video, the police ASP said that his Officer-in-Charge (OC) sent them to go to Anyimgba but Makama diverted them to Ajakawo village, where the SDP candidate, Ajaka hails from.

According to him, he warned Makama that they should not go to Ajakawo but Makama refused, hence, he, the ASP backed out of the mission and called his OC to inform him.

He, however, added that Makama and his people who were the ones driving refused to take them back as directed by his OC.

“We were going to Ajakawo, I told Friday Makama that we should not go there because it is Yakubu’s village but he said he must go and started insulting me. I had to drop.

“My OC told us to go to Anyimgba and he was not aware that we diverted to Ajaka, I called him and informed him that we were going to Ajaka and that this man was causing trouble there and he said we should turn back but because they (Makama and his thugs) were the ones that drove us there, they refused to move us because it was their vehicle.”

There have been a series of political clashes between Governor Bello and his political opponents in the state, especially the SDP governorship candidate, Ajaka, who was once a political ally of the governor.

Governor Bello had been caught on camera brandishing a gun and boasting that no one in the state could shoot better than him.

SaharaReporters on Wednesday reported that the Federal High Court in Abuja restrained Governor Bello from controlling or attempting to regulate the possession of or dealing in firearms in the state.

The court in a ruling given by Justice J.K. Omotosho further declared the appointment of Makama as Director General of the Special Task Force on Illegal Smuggling of Firearms as made by Governor Bello as illegal, null and void.

Justice Omotosho gave the order in a suit numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/697/2 which was filed by Hon. Ahmadu Danjuma against Bello, Makama, Director General of Department of State Services, Director-General of National Intelligent Agency, Inspector General of Police and the National Security Adviser.

In a certified true copy of the order dated October 13, 2023, which SaharaReporters obtained, the court set aside the appointment of Makama as Director General of the Special Task Force on Illegal Smuggling of Firearms in Kogi State by Governor Bello.

The court ordered the Director General of SSS (State Security Services) or DSS and the National Security Adviser to investigate and retrieve all firearms and ammunition in Makama’s possession or under the control of the Special Task Force.
