By-election: All Progressives Party (APC) merger upsets PDP; As YPP sweeps re-run polls in Akwa Ibom

In the just concluded by-election on Saturday February 3, 2024 Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong – udo, candidate of the Young Progressives Party YPP scored 24,050 votes to defeat his People’s Democratic Party rival, Dr. Glory Edet by 17, 282 votes while in Ibiono Ibom, Hon. Moses Essien also YPP State House of Assembly candidate won his opponent, Godwin Ekpo of the PDP by 17, 502 votes against Hon. Ekpo who got 10, 947 votes respectively.

Now, YPP has two members in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and one House of Representatives member.

This is the first time PDP in the state, is facing serious defeat by any opposition party in 25 years of democracy in Akwa Ibom State.

In Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Hon. Moses Essien of YPP defeated his rival, Hon. Friday Ekpo of PDP by 17, 502 and 10,947 votes respectively.

APC is making major defeat against the People’s Democratic Party due to the coalition of both parties; which YPP dissolved its entire structure from the Wards and Chapters to the state structure of APC coordinated by its former governorship candidate, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan at Ukamaka in Essien Udim Local Government Area.

This defeat, according to some political observers, a master stroke and potent political message to the ruling party in the state, the determination and readiness of the APC to riggle out power from PDP in 2027.

“This victory is not only for Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-udo a.k.a. Macaire and Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency but, even some APC enthusiasts in PDP, Mr. Dave Isong stated in his Facebook handle.

Prior to the By-election, the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Borono Bassey had said, the merger was never a threat to the PDP but rather, Senator Bassey Albert’s decamping to APC was his political Waterloo and going into the oblivion.

Meanwhile, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio has congratulated the winners of that election announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) saying, it was a demonstration of the people’s acceptance of the party (APC) in the state and nation.
