Since 1950, it has been illegal to die in this town. The residents of the town passed this law after discovering that the bodies of people who had been buried long ago in the town’s cemetery were not decomposing due to the cold weather. This was so extreme that scientists were still able to get samples of the virus as they exhumed the bodies of people who died in 1918 as a result of the flu pandemic. This made them fearful, because the disease that nearly wiped out the majority of the Earth’s population could still spread if nothing was done about the bodies.
As a result, they made it so that only the remains of people who had been incremated could be buried in the town’s cemetery. Those who were terminally ill or nearing the end of their lives were advised to leave the island for the mainland.
