Double Arsenal team news hint emerges as Mikel Arteta set to be without 5 players vs Chelsea

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus and midfielder Jorginho could both be set to start against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. The latter left the Blues earlier this year in the January transfer window as Jorginho and Kai Havertz return to face their former club for the first time since joining the Gunners.

Arsenal did the double over Chelsea last term, winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in November before picking up a 3-1 victory in the return fixture at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners have won their last three away games against the Blues and Mikel Arteta will be hoping his side can continue their unbeaten run today.

However, Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Leandro Trossard are all doubts for the trip to west London. The England international is continuing to recover from a hamstring problem that saw him miss the 1-0 win against Manchester City, before pulling out of England duty during the international break.

Fortunately for Arsenal fans, football.london understands that Saliba’s toe issue isn’t a huge concern and has been an ongoing discomfort for some time. It means there’s some hope that the Frenchman should be back to face London rivals Chelsea.

Trossard pulled out of Belgium duty due to a hamstring injury – but Gabriel Martinelli’s return will soften the blow of the former Brighton man’s absence. There are expected to be plenty of changes to Arteta’s matchday squad – and Jesus and Jorginho have both hinted they could be set to start against Chelsea.

Jorginho has posted a matchday graphic ahead of Chelsea vs Arsenal.

The Brazilian and Italian have both posted matchday graphics on their Instagram stories ahead of kick-off this afternoon – suggesting they are likely to be involved. Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice are expected to start in midfield – but Thomas Partey only recently returned from injury and so Jorginho could be set to start alongside Rice and the Arsenal captain.

Jesus has been deployed as a winger in previous weeks given Saka and Martinelli’s injury woes – but the Brazilian forward could return to striker today with his fellow countryman now returning to full fitness. It remains to be seen whether Saka starts or is named among the substitutes at Stamford Bridge, but without going as far as to confirm the Arsenal number seven will return for the trip to Stamford Bridge, Arteta did reveal the winger has been working hard to be in contention: “I’m sure he wants to play yes,” the Spanish tactician said.

“He’s been working so hard to be fit for this game. So let’s see where he’s at today [Friday].”

Jurrien Timber remains sidelined with a knee injury and is expected to return in March 2024. Trossard’s injury status is unclear so Reiss Nelson could either start ahead of Saka or be named as a substitute.

Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares did not make the squad against Man City, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the same duo miss out again. Meanwhile, Karl Hein is unlikely to feature as unusual for two goalkeepers to be named on the bench for a Premier League game – with David Raya expected to start ahead of Aaron Ramsdale.
