Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes that Tottenham Hotspur fans would prefer the club to miss out on Champions League qualification than to help Arsenal win the Premier League title.
Spurs will host the Premier League title holders, Manchester City, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night in a crucial fixture that has a direct impact on the title race.
A win for Pep Guardiola’s side would see them overtake the Gunners at the top of the Premier League standings heading into the final round of matches this weekend.
Any slip-up from the Cityzens would shift the title pendulum in favor of Arsenal.
With 86 points, the Gunners currently sit at the top of the Premier League standings, one point ahead of Manchester City.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s clash, Gallas, who played for both Spurs and Arsenal, believes Tottenham will aim for the maximum three points despite the fans’ expectations.
“As a former player, losing a game never crossed my mind,” the former Chelsea defender said.
“We know Tottenham are big rivals with Arsenal, but even that rivalry won’t change the players’ mindset. It’s the fans who will think about it, and I can understand that.
“We know the Tottenham fans are passionate; they would rather miss out on Champions League football by losing to Man City than see Arsenal lift the Premier League trophy. However, the Tottenham players are not all from north London, so their mentalities will be completely different.”
