It was gathered that some African countries have adopted open-border policies aimed at boosting regional integration, trade and tourism. One of the countries on this trajectory is Gambia, which declared itself a visa-free zone for all African travellers, extending the policy to Commonwealth nations, the European Union, and select Baltic states in 2019.
Also, in 2019, Benin lifted visa restrictions for all Africans, thereby strengthening its position as a commercial and transit hub in West Africa. In October 2023, Kenyan President William Ruto struck out visa requirements for all African visitors to enhance trade, tourism and continental connectivity.
Following Kenya’s lead in November 2023, Rwanda declared the country visa-free for all Africans, without fees, reinforcing its reputation as a leading tourism and conference destination.
Nigeria’s West African sister, Ghana, also joined the countries in Africa that have removed the visa entry barrier in a bid to attract investors, tourists and business travellers.
