According to Tafida, in an interview with Daily Trust TV, it was formerly challenging for northern leaders to get votes in the Yoruba and Igbo territories, therefore they cultivated strong ties with the people of the South-South. While explaining why he accepted to serve as the Director-General of the presidential campaign committee of former President Goodluck Jonathan, he said this.
In Tafida’s words: “I know the tactics Sardauna and Tafawa Balewa used to get votes, Yoruba and Igbo areas were no-go-area so they go to south-south and that is where they made friendship. And we used to get people in parliament that would align with us to control wherever they find themselves.
So one man found himself as vice president, then president, and said he wanted to complete what his boss, Yar’adua, started; so why not? I believed in that too and said let’s allow him, at least so that the minority, as you call them, would have a sense of belonging.
