Kogi: Varsity don cautions ASUU on negotiation, industrial harmony

Professor Ovwasa, who gave the charge on Saturday while presenting the first valedictory lecture of the Federal University Lokoja as part of activities to officially bow out of active service of the university, having reached the age of retirement, urged ASUU to respect constituted and legitimate government that is in power at all time.

According to him, the easiest way for the union to achieve meaningful success for its members was it recognises the bigger stakeholder in the survival of public university system based on the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“ASUU should develop robust and friendly relationship with government instead of seeing every government in power as an enemy.

“This is because in the public domain, ASUU has become more known for strike actions than for other critical functions that birthed its formation.

“Well-meaning Nigerians are now concerned essentially with the implications of the strike actions on such critical areas as quality of education, human capital development and general perception of the education system.

“The way forward for ASUU to be successful in the struggles for the survival of public university in Nigeria is to change the confrontational approach to the flexible and diplomatic approach.

“This approach proposes that ASUU should recognize the bigger stakeholder in the survival of public university system based on the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This makes federal and state governments the bigger stakeholders in the public universities in Nigeria,” the don said.

He advised the leadership of the union to handle negotiation with decorum instead of using abusive and provocative language on government officials anytime there is disagreement.…CONTINUE.FULL.READING>>>
