Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, made this known in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account following Obi’s appearance on Arise Television.
Reacting to the interview, Bwala accused the former Anambra State governor of being shallow in his grasp of economics and governance.
He said Obi contradicted himself by endorsing key economic reforms—fuel subsidy removal and unification of exchange rates—while still criticising the manner in which they were implemented.
“Is anybody watching Peter Obi on Arise TV?” Bwala wrote. “He agreed with our policy of subsidy removal and unification of the exchange rate, but claimed he would have done it better than us in an ‘organised manner’.
“When asked what that meant, he played with words, yet ended up agreeing with us. Anybody with a rational mind knows these guys are just looking to grab power, but they don’t have any alternative agenda.”
Bwala further argued that Obi’s remarks reflected shallow knowledge of economics and governance, adding that even the Arise TV interviewer whom he described as part of Obi’s “Obidient movement” could not ignore the lack of depth in his responses.
“That’s why you don’t hear ‘I put it to you’ and no barking like a rottweiler. Yet, ‘if it didn’t Dey, it didn’t Dey,’” he mocked.
Meanwhile, Obi maintained during the Arise TV interview that he had always supported the removal of fuel subsidy.
However, he faulted the Tinubu administration’s handling of the process.
“I have consistently maintained that I would have removed the fuel subsidy,” Obi said. “If you go to my manifesto, it is there and the steps I would have taken in an organised manner. What is wrong is the haphazard way in which it was announced and implemented.”
He also raised concerns over the lack of transparency in how the savings from subsidy removal have been managed.
“Since we were told that we removed it because we don’t want to borrow, and that the funds will allow for investments in critical infrastructure. billions have been saved.
“Where is the money? Where is it invested in critical areas of development?” he asked.
