Nigeria: Meet the Supreme Court Judges Set to Determine the Fate of 2023 Election Appeals

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has constituted a panel to review all appeals related to the 2023 Presidential Election. These appeals challenge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), and dispute the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kassim Shettima.

Following the dismissal of the petitions of Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Peter Gregory Obi & Labour Party, and Atiku Abubakar & the PDP by the Justice Tsammani-led Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal on September 6, fresh evidence has been submitted by Atiku Abubakar regarding the eligibility of Bola Tinubu and the Chicago State University depositions.

The panel, consisting of esteemed Supreme Court Justices, will begin hearing these appeals today. Each justice brings a unique background and experience to the table.

Justice John Inyang Okoro JSC will chair the panel. He has a distinguished legal career, having been a member of significant judgments, including the affirmation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in 2019 and the disqualification of the Bayelsa Governor-Elect, David Lyon.
