April 4, 1968, was a sad day for many Americans, Blacks, and many other people around the world because of the gruesome murder of Martin Luther King Jnr.

The tragedy struck around 6 p.m. on that day as King was tragically shot and killed while standing on the balcony outside his second-story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

The prominent civil rights leader had been in Memphis to advocate for sanitation workers’ rights and was en route to dinner when he was struck by a bullet in the jaw, resulting in a severed spinal cord. King was pronounced dead upon his arrival at a Memphis hospital. He was 39 years old.

In the months leading up to his assassination, King had grown increasingly concerned about economic inequality in America.

He initiated a Poor People’s Campaign aimed at addressing this issue, which included plans for a march on Washington and other places.
