President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has clarified his relationship with Gilbert Chagoury, the owner of the HiTech Company responsible for the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway. The president made this announcement at the project’s flag-off on Sunday, May 27.

This clarification comes three weeks after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused President Tinubu of having a conflict of interest regarding the contract.

Atiku alleged in a statement on May 6 that President Tinubu’s son was a board member of HiTech, and the federal government only awarded the contract due to the relationship between the president and Chagoury.

Atiku claimed that HiTech was awarded the contract without any competitive bidding from other construction companies.

In response, Tinubu revealed that the chairman of HiTech, Ambassador Gilbert Chagoury, and Engr. Ronald Chagoury have a longstanding professional relationship and have collaborated for many years.

Tinubu also mentioned that the indigenous company had successfully completed a project to protect a critical section of the Lagos shoreline from damage by the Atlantic Ocean. The Video Is Here

He said: “Together, we worked to tame the Atlantic and turned a disaster into a great asset of value. We lost weight and took insults but eventually tamed the Atlantic. We achieved our goals.”
