The reaction by the DHQ followed the circulation of a WhatsApp message suggesting that retired and serving Generals, academics and members of other professionals pooled funds to secure Tsiga’s release from his abductors.
The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau in a statement said the claim by one General Abdullahi in the viral WhatsApp message is misleading.
Also describing the claim as an effort to undermine the efforts of the military in the rescue of Tsiga, the DHQ said troops combed several hideouts across Katsina and Zamfara to secure his release.
Stating that although no contact was made with the abductors, the military’s onslaught led to the fleeing of the terrorists.
“Although no direct contact was made with the abductors, the troops successfully pressured the criminals, who abandoned rustled animals and some captives in their hasty retreat.
“The troops nevertheless sustained the pursuit of the terrorists with unwavering determination, despite facing difficulties due to challenging terrain,” Gasau said.
He added that an air raid also disrupted the activities of the abductors and the escape of some of their captives.
According to him, Tsiga was unable to escape due to health complications
He said, “However, subsequent air operations at Dunya Hill, a suspected bandit stronghold where General Tsiga was held, disrupted the terrorists, leading to the escape of several captives. Regrettably, the former DG was unable to escape due to health concerns.
Gasau said it is only fair to recognise the kinetic and non-kinetic efforts of the military in the rescue operation towards the safety of the senior officer.
“Troops will continue to support all efforts in ensuring peace and security across the country. The general public is therefore encouraged to continue supporting troops by providing credible intelligence to assist in this regard,” Gasau added.
